Out There: A National Parks Story

Out There is a breathtaking and deeply human journey through America’s national parks. This award-winning documentary that asks what truly connects us to the wild places we call “public.” In the centennial year of the U.S. National Park Service, a young filmmaker and his childhood friend set out on a 10,000-mile road trip with little more than a camera and a question: what draws people to these sacred landscapes? What begins as a summer adventure becomes a seven-year odyssey, uncovering untold stories of those who protect, visit, and find healing in the parks.

Through stunning cinematography, intimate storytelling, and an evocative original score, Out There captures the parks not just as scenic backdrops, but as living testaments to resilience, belonging, and the shared human need for connection with the earth. It’s both a visual love letter and a call to remember that these lands, and our relationship to them, are central to who we are.

Join the Council for Ecological Discipleship for a conversation inspired by Out There: A National Parks Story. Together, we’ll explore how our own stories of land, beauty, and belonging call us into deeper relationship with creation, and how public lands invite us to rediscover the sacred in the world around us.
